Nothing makes you get out of bed and thank the lord you're alive quite like a trip to the DMV. In most states, it's the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles), but in Tennessee, they call it the Department of Safety. Same dog, different shit. Anyway, I had to go there today. I got there about 8:00 AM. I thought they opened about that time, but they opened at 7:30. No biggie. I took a number and decided I would be patient.
I waited about half an hour before they called me to take the eye test. Then I sat back down, waited again, then took the written exam. the written exam consisted of a computer program that asked me questions and goes at its own pace. I could not make this thing go any quicker. Finally after missing two questions, I passed the test. One of the questions I missed was "How many cars have to be lined up behind you on the highway before you are required to pull over and let traffic pass? (3,5, or 8) The answer is 5, but I put 8. Oh well. Nobody ever does that anyway, at least not when I'M one of the people behind them!!
So I wait for another twenty to forty minutes. It's now about 11:30 AM, and I'm ready to take the damn road test and be on the way. Finally an examiner comes out and is ready to check the signals and stuff on the car, and then take me for my drive. The first thing she did was fail me. She noticed the cracked windshield on the Stratus and said she couldn't pass this car. I was pissed, but just a little.
So without hesitation, I went to my Dad's house, got his Pathfinder and went back. It took a little while for me to get back out there, so about 45 minutes had elapsed all together. After another lengthy wait, it was my turn. I drove out of the parking lot and around the block. I came back, parked and passed the test. A few more minutes of waiting and I had my new license.
After we got out of that less then enjoyable experience, we had to high tail it to my parents' house for a quick shower and off to HGTV to interview for that job. It was already 12:45, and my interview was scheduled for 2:00. It was a quick 15 minute drive to the house, a record breaking shower, and I quickly dressed in my suit and headed to the interview in West Knoxville.
I pulled into HGTV just in time for the interview. Two o'clock, on the nose. I went in and waited on the man who was coming to interview me. We went in and he showed me the area where the computers were kept. It's a pretty massive setup, hosting over 25,000 web sites operating on a OC-12 bandwidth. That's roughly 655 Mbps, or 655,000 Kbps, as opposed to a standard 56 Kbps modem. In a word, SMOKIN'!!!!
We went into his office where we talked computers and he looked at my resume and I asked him some questions. He took me around and introduced me to all the members of the staff. I thought that was a good sign. He said several things that made me feel good about the interview. He told me to call him next Thursday or Friday and he'd let me know something.
Later in the night I went over to Jack's new land to see his doublewide and all his property. It was pretty dark, but I could get the point of the landscape by the shade of the night sky againsy the tree line. Jack's trailer is cool, though. I also got to meet his friend, Christy, who has a computer with internet access, and therefore is responsible for me getting to talk to Jack online from time to time.
Jack and I talked long into the night, making up for lost time, and I also halped him clean the carpets of his new home. Finally around four in the morning, after shampooing the carpet in every room of his new home, I packed up my Kirby G5 with dry foam shampooer and headed to bed.
